Purolator – Delivering on Building a Diverse Workforce

Stories

Whether we’re sending a birthday gift to a friend across the country or waiting for a part to fix our car, millions of people rely on logistics companies to deliver what matters. Beyond the familiar delivery trucks in our neighborhoods, thousands of dedicated employees work behind the scenes every day to ensure packages reach their destinations.

At Purolator, one of Canada’s leading freight and logistics providers, delivering on their promises depends on a reliable and committed workforce. So when Connect had the opportunity to recommend Gabe for a role at the Winnipeg Terminal, we were confident he would bring real value to their team.

Building on relationships established locally in 2022, and in partnership with Ready, Willing & Able—a national initiative designed to increase workforce participation for people with autism and intellectual disabilities —Purolator welcomed Gabe as their first hire from Connect in 2023.

Not Just a Job

One quality that immediately stood out to Purolator was Gabe’s mindset. His supervisor shared “He wasn’t just looking for a job—he wanted to build a career.” In a competitive labour market where finding and retaining great talent can be challenging, Gabe was an exceptional hire.

Gabe began in a seasonal retail role and quickly advanced through positions of increasing responsibility thanks to his drive, adaptability, and eagerness to learn. His journey has included roles such as Courier Check Out, and Float, a position that is trained across the retail clerical functions—including international shipping and damaged package assessment.  Most recently, Gabe received a promotion to Lead Hand, a leadership role within the Retail team.

Gabe has earned every opportunity, consistently demonstrating his capability and commitment to Purolator’s success. His supervisor believes Gabe has a strong future ahead, with the potential to grow into a management role.

Reflecting on his experience, Gabe shared:

“It makes a big difference when the place you’re working at recognizes what you have to offer and gives you opportunities to use those skills and advance. It’s very interesting work.  It’s part of a massive industry that most people don’t realize the scope of. You order something online and it appears at your door, but there’s so much that happens in between.”

Gabe’s success helped pave the way for Dominique, who joined Purolator in October 2024 as an AM Sorter. This shift is historically challenging to staff, so Dominique’s reliability and strong work ethic quickly made him a valued team member. Like Gabe, he is eager to build a long-term career with Purolator.

Dominique described his experience as life-changing:

“This is the first full-time job I’ve ever had. It has a set schedule, pays well, and includes benefits. I was able to afford my first new pair of glasses in 10 years. I enjoy the job, and it’s a great fit. It’s given me purpose, responsibility, and respect.”

Recognizing Talent and Opportunity

Purolator’s management shared that their positive experiences working with Gabe and Dominique, and partnering with Connect, have strengthened their confidence in hiring and supporting employees with disabilities. While these team members may occasionally require additional coaching, they emphasized that like all employees, they simply need guidance to reach their full potential.

When asked what advice they would give to other employers, Purolator said:

“If you’re apprehensive, take the first step. In today’s labour market, it’s a great way to diversify your workforce and access talent you may have been overlooking.  Inclusive hiring works when you invest in selecting, training and supporting the person, and in turn they will help your business succeed.”

 They added:

“Purolator has a lot to offer: competitive wages, stability, and real career growth. Hiring candidates like Gabe and Dominique brings strong skills and commitment to your team, while also creating life-changing opportunities for people who genuinely want to work.”

Purolator was awarded the Best Practices in Employment Diversity Award for Large Business in October 2025 by the Manitoba Supported Employment Network (MSEN)
